Frequently Asked Questions

How does online tutoring work?

Online tutoring is very similar to in person tutoring, just a few upgrades. The tutor and student still meet one-on-one. Through the use of video chat software, and a virtual whiteboard, the student can learn from the comfort of their own home. The video chat software provides important verbal and nonverbal feedback to the tutor and student. The virtual whiteboard can instantly share, highlight, and modify any document or picture of homework problems. With the internet at the student and tutor’s disposal, there are endless resources available instantly. This provides a highly superior learning environment compared to traditional in-person tutoring.

Why choose online tutoring?

Online tutoring takes traditional tutoring and improves it from all perspectives. Scheduling is easier and time is saved due to the fact that there is no need for the student to have to coordinate rides to tutoring sessions, remember to bring all necessary materials, or deal with canceled sessions due to traffic. Technology today is incredibly important. Acquainting the student with technology as early as reasonably possible boosts highly critical technology skills. Cost to the student is also lower due to reduced overhead and travel time. The best part? Sessions can be held virtually anywhere!

Do I need to buy any equipment to get started?

In most cases, no! You probably already have what it takes to get started. The only hardware requirement is a computer, laptop, tablet or similar device. The device you choose to use does need to have a camera and microphone. The majority of computers come with this nowadays whether you are aware of it or not. Even if the computer does not have a camera and microphone, the video chat can be done using a smartphone and everything else is done using the computer or tablet. All online applications utilized come at no cost to you!

In short, let me know what technology you have available and we will make it work!

Where is the most unique location a student has had a session?

One extremely dedicated student was able to coordinate a regularly scheduled session in between figure skating lessons. With the use of a mobile hotspot and a laptop, tutoring and ice skating were achieved almost simultaneously!

I don’t have internet, what can I do?

Online tutoring does require an internet connection. Fortunately, technology today has come a very long way in making this possible. The majority of phones are “hotspot capable” which is often included with base cellular plans. A hotspot device uses a cell phone signal as an internet provider that a computer can use. There are even USB sticks that can plug into the computer directly to provide great internet coverage using only cellular signal. If this is not an option, there are usually public places with internet connection close by. Try checking your local library or college campus for private meeting rooms.

How much does it cost?

I offer very affordable and fair rates. Please contact me with your specific tutoring request, though, as rates may vary! All services offered can be found on the Services page.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept payment through PayPal and I invoice weekly. This means you are not required to put down a large lump sum payment like most big tutoring companies require. If you can’t afford one week, that’s fine we will pick up the next week! I am very flexible and work to accommodate all of my clients the best that I can.
